Can I Join?

Most employees and contractors can join. Only managers and supervisors cannot.

The company has a few people who seem to blur the line between management and labor, especially at the very lowest levels.

Here's a guide to help you determine your eligibility →

How Do I Join?

In a perfect world:

In a perfect world, you'd be greeted by a union steward when you join the company (or team) and shown all the ropes, including how to take advantage of whatever your collective-bargaining-unit has already won. The world is far from perfect so far, but we're trying to get it closer every day.

With an established chapter:

Your location may have an active chapter that meets regularly, perhaps for lunch. They might even display signs during. In that case, go up and introduce yourself. Feel free to ask many questions. We don't bite (unless you ask very nicely) but we might ask you to help with the next outreach event. Expect to show your badge and get looked up soon enough, because we do report improper management behavior to proper authorities.

Building towards a chapter:

Otherwise, the best way is to join our discord. There's a brief application process and an online interview, generally including a challenge to establish that you are indeed who you say you are. Then you can expect some orientation, and finally the opportunity to meet other vetted members from the same region or office. The goal is to find like-minded people and build toward one of the earlier scenarios.

I'm in! Now how Do I Advance the Cause?

Step One: Form Strong Social Bonds with Genuine Workers

What You Can Do:

  • Get to know your colleagues as people, not mere cogs in a machine
  • Include members of your own team, others you collaborate with
  • If possible, eat together (avoid clique behavior)
  • Coordinate non-work activities among this social group

Organizing Safely:

  • Do not disrupt people actively working.
  • Do not neglect your own productivity.
  • Arrange to meet people away from their desks.
  • Choose non-work places and times like break rooms, coffee and lunch breaks.
  • Maintain group harmony. A disruptive person can be a liability.
  • Get training. We have regular online meetings and love to share.

Step Two: Expansion and Outreach

There's power in numbers, so let's get numbers. Courage is contagious, so show off your union spirit where colleagues can see.

Community Engagement:

  • Join the weekly meetings
  • Post more in the community
  • Bring in more friends/colleagues
  • Participate in planning and executing events

Active Participation:

  • Help out in the breakout committees
  • Share ideas, or take initiative
  • Be part of the flyering campaign
  • Show up for lunchtime meetups

Additional Ways to Get Involved:

  • • Wear or display union-logo buttons/magnets/keychains
  • • Learn and practice organizing conversations with your colleagues.
  • • Post about us on social media and relevant sites
  • • Share conversations with coworkers in the community
  • • Build out a list of union-eligible colleagues in your bargaining unit
  • • Equip yourself with business cards and know-your-rights materials
  • • Join in on the carpooling effort and entice people to join while you commute

Step Three: Grow Worker Power

The general idea is to build effective bargaining units that leverage worker solidarity to renegotiate terms and conditions of our employment in a way more favorable to the workers.

  • • You need a plan that works with your colleagues,
  • • You need your colleagues onboard with the plan,
  • • And then you and your colleagues need to execute the plan.

It's easy enough to say, but the doing will probably require help. One size does not fit all. That's one of the key points of JPMC Workers Alliance being a global organization: Our online presence lets every bargaining unit coordinate and share resources, including professional guidance from the national union organizations with which we've affiliated: CWA in the United States; CWU in the United Kingdom. That's why we so highly recomend joining the Discord and becoming an active participant. The community there has developed a strong base of knowledge and understanding.
